Awkward Family Photos

Our Evie girl turned one month on Sunday. Since Jake's family was still here we decided to have a mini birthday party for her and get our first picture as a family of four.

Here's our best effort at capturing our family.

Okay, everyone look at the camera and smile. Or maybe just look really unprepared.

Jake, the baby's head is all slumped down. Can you hold her differently?

Like, put your hand on her chin like when you burp her?

Um, yes, just like that. It doesn't look like you are choking* her at all.

Wait, is our other child going for the cake?  Oh well, keep on smiling.
And that's as good as it gets.

Maybe we will have better luck at month two. And don't you love the stickers on Henry's face?

*I'm pretty sure this goes without saying, but since this is the internet and all...Jake is not actually choking Evelyn, just supporting her head. I assure you she was breathing the entire time.

A second round of reinforcements.

I had to last a whole twenty four hours before my second round of help arrived. That's not actually true. I think I was home about twenty minutes after returning from Salt Lake City to drop Mimi off before a neighborhood girl  (love her!) saved me from myself and came and got Henry for ice cream. Apparently the screaming newborn and the toddler wandering outside alone tipped her off that maybe I didn't have it all together. Our last visitors just left this morning and Jake is home again so life might return to normal for a few days.

We loved having Omi, Opa, Auntie Erika and cousin Koen stay with us. We were spoiled with delicious food and lots of help and fun.

These two boys are exactly six months apart and have completely different personalities but are becoming best buds (most of the time)!
I have an idea. Let's put these balls in our mouths and then spit them out at each other! Good idea, Ko!
90% of all waking hours must be spent jumping off anything we can find.
My name is Evelyn and I like to eat.
Opa trying to keep up with the boys.
Admiring their fist granddaughter.
My name is Evelyn and I steal hearts.

We miss you all already!

Super Mimi!

Our Mimi came this past week to rescue me from being a single parent and to love on the grand babies. So what did our grand and wonderful Mimi do while she was here?
She supervised bath time while loving on this doll.
She read Thomas stories with much more excitement than Mom and Dad.
She played and played and played.
She made cookies with this turkey.
She gave mama lots of breaks.
She almost peed her pants when she rounded the corner and came face to face with this little guy.
She played some more.
She introduced E to the bottle.

And then of course there was the deep cleaning, the cooking, the dishwashing, the laundry folding, the newborn poop stain removing, and the the cranky baby burping.

Needless to say everyone was a little sad when we took "Mimi to the airport to go back to Papa's house."

Thanks so much for coming, Mom. See you in two more weeks. Evie will probably be 12 pounds by then!

Evie's first two weeks

Sweet baby girl is two weeks old today. We've been getting a bit of grief over not posting enough pictures of our little darling, so here are some snapshots of Evelyn's first two weeks. They're almost all from my really awesome point and shoot camera. We'll get more quality pictures once Jake's schedule slows down a bit.
Henry loves sis so much that he must kiss her forehead, lips, both eyes and mouth before going to bed. She is not always a fan of this affection.
Two days old.
Such a rough life.
The wee little peanut and the giant big brother.
So lovable.

Equally lovable.
If it's not 3 am, this is what I am doing.

I have hair, it's true.

Blessed.

Had this fella wrapped around her finger immediatly.

King of the playground. He can terrifyingly climb anything.
First bath was a success!

My Henry

*I wrote this the night before Evie was born- not knowing that she was coming the next afternoon- and never got around to publishing it.*

While this blog has mainly been on one subject for the last two and half years-the big H man- he will soon (hopefully sooner rather than later) be forced to share the spotlight with what appears to be a very long and perhaps hefty companion. Before the blog is overrun with pictures of our bald beauty (do you think there is any hope that she will have hair before two?) I thought it was only appropriate to give a little update on my very favorite little boy.

Thomas the Train continues to rule his life. Oh how this boy loves trains. He can tell you almost all of the engines names, even ones that I don't know. He wakes up in the morning and cannot wait to go downstairs to play trains. He currently loves to make the engines fall off the tracks and into the mud. His trains accompany him everywhere. He is not the only train lover in the family. If an engine goes missing Jake will fret and practically tear the house apart until he finds that poor, lost engine.
Playing trains in the snow is his very favorite. He was definitely the only family member who was sad when the last snow finally melted.

He loves to jump. He will jump off anything and everything, but almost always ask, "I jump?" before leaping off.

He knows how to open the child lock on the fridge and throughout the day will open the refrigerator and say, "I'm looking for something." He also says the same thing when we go to the store. Up and down the aisles we go while he "looks for something." One time it was a plunger he was on the hunt for. He was not pleased when we left the store without it.

He loves to sing. He especially loves to sing with Daddy.

He loves, loves, loves friends. He does not love to share his engines with friends. If you are lucky you will get the extra Thomas engine we have. It's slightly broken. If you do get an engine, don't go thinking you have free reign to do what you please. Henry will tell you when and where on the track to put that engine and you best do what he says.

He finally kicked the bottle habit and for some reason calls the milk we put in his cup, "hot chocolate milk." He's never had chocolate milk so I'm not sure where he came up with this idea.
One last cheers before the bottles were outta here!

He sleeps in his big boy bed like a pro. He can be a bit of a mischievous child, so we thought we would really have our work cut out for us, but not at all. We've only had to put him back in bed two times in the week he has been out of the baby cage.

He is also a poop artist, and it is terrifying and disgusting and hopefully one day I will find it funny.

We certainly love you, big boy and are excited (or maybe a bit anxious) to see how your respond to Miss E.

I've done a lot of dumb things.

I'd say in the last 31 years, I have made a lot of dumb decisions. Starting my master's program a week after we got pregnant, dumb. Potty training my 28 month old while in my last month of pregnancy, even dumber. Now to be honest, I was kind of bullied into potty training. I wasn't planning on attempting this feat until late this summer, or maybe not even until someone created a pill that you give your child that magically transforms them into a toilet only user. But unfortunately the two year old that runs a lot of my life had other plans and that included never keeping his diaper on.

So yes, these days you will find me and my just about 37 week belly on the floor scrubbing out poop. The pee? Oh we've got that down. The other, oh not so much at all. Henry has decided that he will ever so helpfully start to clean up his mess once he goes on the floor and I won't go into detail but I'm sure you can imagine how delightful it is to enter a room that reeks like #2 and then see the pile of wipes your son has used to attempt to clean up. Sure it's cute that he wants to be helpful, but I"m not sure how far that will go with our landlords when they see the poo stains all over the basement carpet. If only he would learn to blot instead of scrub.

Enough about poo, look how much fun this kid had today.

Look at that blue sky! It was a balmy 54 at the park today with wind strong enough to just about blow Henry right off the slides. Ah, yes, Spring is here. For now.
